Analysis of the art market

In this book from 2021, Peter Grondahl examines how different types of art galleries - against the background of globalization, digitization and socio-cultural change - manage the conflict of objectives between the claim to mediation and market pressures. Only a few top galleries succeed in growing through price, which can 'sell' myths to potent collectors with the help of canonized artists. Where there is a lack of desire, scarcity leads to negative growth.

Art education must not be based solely on cognitive motives (connoisseurship, investment, etc.), but must be supplemented by affective motives (aesthetics, lifestyle, etc.). A 'democratization' of art benefits all actors: interested laypeople who find easier access to art and galleries who can orientate themselves on the 'dream equation' of the luxury branch ("distance between those who know and those who can") .
